Where does the time go? Just a few months ago we were looking at our first baby born here on the farm. Now we are coming into spring and starting all the needed to make the farm better than it was last year. This usually means a lot of fence and pasture work. This year it also meant planting trees around the property where we actually want them.
The big update though is that we have finally settled on a plan for Connor. Since our first calf was a bull he sort of messed up out plans. Girls are easy to know what to do with, boys, not so much. We’ve decided to keep him for at least a year and use him for our first round of on the farm breeding. And while we do have 2 cows already, we need to find a couple more. And we want to cross-breed the highlands with “something else”.
There are plenty of people doing Highland cross-breeds, Angus is common, but we are thinking about a different path. Perhaps a Hereford, or pair of them. That may yield a great looking cow, known as a high-ford, with a lot of good qualities. According to the research I have done so far. Then Connor can try to breed them for a Fall birth which would be easier on everyone.
